Crescent Lake Hike-In Fishing...

A few weeks back, Rose and I hiked into Crescent and Carter Lakes to do some fly-fishing for huge grayling. We've done this hike before and it's one of our favorite places to go into. Seems like every time we've gone in, it's been raining, cold, and windy. This time proved to be different and it was sunny and nice, although the wind kicked up a bit later on. Really though, we couldn't complain!

We loaded up my pack frame with all our gear and we headed up. It's about three miles in and about a 1500 foot elevation gain from the parking area over a mile and a half. We reached our destination and I believe Rose had a fish on with her first cast. We fished for a couple hours and caught over 20 grayling. Rose once again ended up with the biggest one which I think taped out at about 19-20" which is a monster in the grayling world.

On the hike back out, I wanted to stop and fish at a spot at Carter lake where a little stream rushes into the lake. Rose caught a nice little rainbow trout on her first cast. She at one point hooked into one that snapped her four pound leader. So we were thinking there was a big lunker down there somewhere! A short while later, I had a fish hit my little bead-headed nymph and at first didn't feel like much. I thought it was a smaller fish, until it got near the surface and he took off! My reel was whizzing as the rainbow peeled off line and careened out of the water time after time. Finally I was able to land this guy and check out what I'd had on the end of my line. It was an 18" rainbow, what a trophy for a small alpine lake that has ice on it from November to June!

Enjoy the pictures!
