This was taken 2 days before I had Ella. Riley and I took a long walk on the Coastal Trail after a long day of work that started at 3am. I thought I had a while and was trying to get things progressing.
On Monday March 31st and I worked a full day and had planned on working the rest of the week in to the following week. I didn't expect to have her anytime soon and was feeling good! I had talked to my Sister that day and said I was going to pretend my water broke to Riley. It only seemed appropriate since it was April 1st. Little did I know I wouldn't have to pretend.
Monday night Riley got really sick and was throwing up, I was starting to get concerned and the thought went through my mind... what if my water DID break and he was feeling like this. I pushed the thought to the back of my head and was hoping he felt better in the morning.
Tuesday morning I woke up around 6am and got up to use the bathroom. I immediately realized either my water broke or I had another problem. I changed and went back to bed and told myself nothing was happening. I was laying in bed as still as possible thinking if I didn't move nothing would progress. I know kind of funny to think about now. A little while later I asked Riley how he was feeling and he unfortunately wasn't any better and shortly later proceeded to throw up... I remember rolling over and looking at him and wanting to say, "Riley get yourself together, we are going to have a baby today!". But after looking at him I knew that wasn't going to be any use. I didn't know how to tell him I think my water broke, knowing he was feeling so sick and this news was only going to make him feel worse and now sick with worry on top of it. I slowly and as gently as possible broke the news to him. At this point it was around 8:30am. Riley got up and decided to go to an Urgent Care to get something to make the nausea go away. I was concerned with him driving so I got up with him and took him in.
I was having contractions all night and into the morning but nothing very painful and I wasn't concerned about it happening very quickly. As we drove to Urgent Care they started to get worse but I was more concerned about getting something for Riley before things with me started to further progress. While Riley was seeing the doctor I called my doctors office and told them I believe my water broke but I was going to wait to come in that afternoon around 4pm when I had an appt. anyways. I laugh now that I told them that... but at the time I was in denial anything was happening. The doctor very sternly told me, NO.. you need to come in now and someone needs to bring you. I didn't tell her my ride is getting a shot of phenergan and wont be able to drive for a few hours. Instead I said ok, I will be in shortly.
When Riley got out I drove him home and told him I was going to go home shower get my bags and drive myself to the hospital. Even with how sick he was he felt so bad and he was trying to think of who could come with me. I didn't have anyone I felt comfortable with being at the hospital and possibly going through labor with me. At this point I honestly thought I would be going through labor on my own and he wouldn't be able to make it. I was trying to stay calm but I was really freaking out!
Riley mentioned our friend Summer who we are pretty good friends with. Summer is actually a nurse at providence. I told him I can drive myself but if she can make it later for the labor portion so I don't have to do it myself. When we got home I jumped in the shower and didn't realize it but he called her Husband (Riley is really good friends with him) and asked to see if Summer can come get me and filled him in on what was going on. Summer was a lifesaver!! She came and picked my up and spent the next 5 hours with me and helped me understand everything that was going on. She helped me make decisions around what to do as labor was progressing VERY slowly and what all the different drugs were, what everything meant and what the processes were in the hospital. We spent a few hours in the triage area as they checked and than admitted me. Because I was progressing so slowly they even let me wait a little longer to get a brand new room (they also felt bad that Riley couldn't be there). I also got awesome care... probably due to Summer being a nurse and knowing a lot of the staff. It was great, thank you again Summer!
This was taken right before I left for the hospital. I think I was still in denial we were going to have a baby that day... I guess in my mind I had it planned out so differently.

That afternoon Riley called and said he was feeling a lot better and was going to make it. At this point I knew I wasn't going to have this baby for a while, they even talked about it taking until 2am or 3am. This was such a relief for me, not because I wanted a long labor but because I really wanted Riley there!
After Riley got there I was finally hooked up to machines and we got things moving. At this point we started to call family. I am laughing about it now but Riley got a text message back from someone that said... Yeah, right! Riley had to send them a picture of me in a hospital gown. (At the time I was going through a contraction and wanted to kill him for doing it). But I guess thats what you get when you go in to labor on the April 1st!
Ella joined us a 10:40pm on April 1st, only 1 hour and 20 minutes from her due date. Riley and I both were expecting a boy and was such an amazing moment when Riley announced, 'Its a girl, oh my gosh its girl'. She was definitely our April Fools Baby! It took us until the next morning to finally decide on a name. We were set on a boys name but hadn't agreed on a girls name yet. Ella Mae is Riley's Great Grandmothers name and it seemed to fit. She is perfect and healthy! I stayed in the hospital another day and took her home Thursday.
