As most of you know I have been working hard to get promoted when I move back down to Oregon. A lot of the pre-interview stuff requires me to get to know all the district and group leaders. Makes it difficult, being in AK and not being able to have a lot of one on one time with any of them.
The plan was to send me down to seattle in July to walk stores with district/group leaders. Unfortunately, around that same time they decided to cut back on how much air travel happens throughout the company.
Lucky for me.. My boss was planning a chartered fishing trip in July for some district/group leaders that were coming up to AK. He worked it out that instead of visiting stores in Washington, I would spend one on one time with them on a charter fishing trip out of Seward. He asked if I wanted to go, there wasn't even a question!! YES!! Bring me fishing on Targets dime to assess me as a leader!!! Hmmm I knew it would be interesting!
As you can imagine I was a little nervous. Only been out in the ocean once and it was a miserable experience. I took seasickness medicine leading up to that day and brought motion sickness wrist bands. The last thing I wanted to do was start puking in front of everyone.
We left at 4am and drove the 2 1/2 hours down to seward. The whole day was spent thinking... Rose, DO NOT say something stupid and embarrass yourself!! Once we got to seward we loaded the boat and took off. There were 5 of us, 2 of the Alaska Store Managers, our district leader (over 9 stores) and our group leader (over 65 stores).
We drove about 16 miles out and started fishing for Salmon. After we caught quite a few we headed out even further to fish for ling cod, black bass, tiger rock fish, yellow eye, green ling. I lost track of how many fish I actually caught and it was so fun fishing for different sorts of fish and not just one. My boss actually hooked in to a halibut even though we were not even fishing for them. It ended up being 130lbs!!! The whole day could not have gone better! We had 70+ degree weather, caught our limits in almost everything, gorgeous views, saw whales all over the place, I didn't get sick and we had porpoises swimming right next to the boat for 2 miles on the way back.
When we got back we ate dinner while our fish was being processed and packaged. Then headed home... When all was said and done we had 209lbs of fillets!! I took home about 50lbs of a variety of every fish. I couldn't stop telling Riley about how much fun we had, we have already booked the same charter for the end of the month so we can go together.
I was handed one of the biggest ling cods... as you can tell I was having a hard time with it!
