Looking out across the Cook Inlet near our house.
Here is a picture of downtown anchorage. This trail is only about 2 miles from our house.
(Don't miss Riley's post today, below mine)
Lately I have had a lot of questions about how things are going with my job and what I have been up to outside of work. Thought I would share a little about how things are going on my end.
There are two Target’s in Anchorage and I was training for three weeks at the south store and about two weeks ago I finally began at my ‘home’ store in the North part of town. I start at 3:00am each morning and work every other weekend with Thursdays off. It is a very similar schedule I had back in Portland except for the early mornings. Some days I am able to get off as early at 1:00pm but most of the time I am off around or after 3:00pm. My job as Logistics is managing freight flow and replenishment in the store along with the whole backroom process.
Most people in the lower 48 don’t realize how diverse Anchorage is. There are so many different ethnicities here, Riley and I were very surprised during our first couple days living here. I have about 40 or so employees on my team ages range from 18 to around 60 and only about 4 are female. Out of those 40 around 5 are Caucasian and the rest are Hmong, Russian, Hispanic, Native American, Philipino, African American….. you get the idea. Everyone’s second language is English and well…. I don’t speak any other language so communication is a huge challenge.
There are days Riley and I don’t see each other because of his work schedule and my sleep schedule but we have been able to get out on some nights for walks or just hang out and watch T.V. around the house. Riley has been very supportive of my schedule, cooking me dinner on a lot of nights and changing his schedule around to spend more time with me.
Also, last week I was offered another 20% raise. I guess this was decided before I even got here but no one communicated that to me. There are some complications and added challenges being an offshore market, for example all of our trailers come from Albany, Oregon. This causes some timeline issues with products and supplies. All apparel product is also re-ticketed as soon as it comes off the truck. So an extra step we have to deal with being all the way up here. To celebrate, Riley is taking me out to dinner (something we don’t get to do very often).
We have some pretty amazing trails around anchorage and right near our house. Riley bought me a bike last night off craigslist for only $60!! I was so EXCITED!!! So tomorrow when Riley is off catching more fish on the Russian (since there is not room for me) I am going to be out exploring anchorage on my bike! Maybe I will even decide to post some pictures of my bike ride since Riley is definitely beating me with the posts!!
